Seniors put a cap on a successful season.
Three Alma High School players advanced from the 5A West Conference tournament at Arkansas Tech University to compete in the 5A State Tennis tournament in Little Rock.
Breanna Williams (senior) advanced to the conference finals in the women’s singles where she finished runner-up to Claire Doshier of Harrison. The men’s doubles team of Jacob Hamilton (senior) and Dalton Webb (senior) finished third in the conference tournament. All three players earned All-Conference honors for advancing to state.
Williams came into the tournament as the No. 2 seed from the West and opened play Kathleen Brisgeforth from White Hall. Williams won in straight sets (6-2, 6-2) to advance to the quarterfinals where she met Riley Jeh from Pulaski Academy. The first set was hotly contested with Williams winning (6-4) before pulling away in straight sets winning the second set (6-1).
By advancing to the semifinals, Williams became the first Airedalette tennis player to earn All-State honors since 2004.
Day Two of the contest was much harder with Williams falling in the semifinals to the No. 3 overall player (6-2,6-2) before losing the consolation match to conference foe from Harrison.
At the state tournament, Hamilton/Webb (third seed from the West) upset the Hot Springs Lakeside team of Ahlbrandle/Eastwood (second seed from the Southwest) in three sets.
The Alma duo won the first set in a 10-8 tiebreak, lost the second set 4-6, before winning the match in the third and final set 6-4. In the quarterfinals, the Alma team played the No. 1 team for the East, Valley View’s Rogers/Maurras, and the overall No. 4 seed in the tournament. The match was close throughout with Alma dropping to the team from Valley View 3-6, 7-6, 7-5.
