Alma, Van Buren drop nonconference contests.

Morrilton pounced on Alma and didn’t let up, keeping the Airedale offense away from the field to pick up the 30-8 win Thursday night at Airedale Stadium at Citizens Bank Field.

The Devil Dogs (2-0) recovered three onside kicks in the first quarter.

The first resulted in a touchdown for Morrilton. The Devil Dogs would pin Alma (0-2) deep in its own territory which resulted in two safeties. The first set up the second touchdown, a 54-yard run by Jake Sessions. The third onside kick ended much like the second one, Morrilton going three-and-out. However, the Devil Dogs’ punt pinned Alma on their own 12.

A penalty and a bad snap gave Morrilton another safety.

Alma got on board with a 61-yard touchdown strike from Brayden Allen to Heith Housewright with 0:36 remaining in the first half. Allen’s two-point conversion put Alma on the board 18-8.

Tucker Granberry threw two touchdown passes in the second half and finished 7 of 16 passing for 103 yards.

Allen was 4 of 6 passing for 118 yards.

“It wasn’t pretty. We actually executed pretty well and for the most part did things right. We had poor field position which resulted in those two safeties,” said coach J.D. Coursey. “Our defense settled down and played well for must of the game, but turnovers and failing to recover those onside kicks put our defense on the field too much. Seth Cole played very well at defensive tackle for us.”

Alma travels to Booneville before opening River Valley Conference play at Chaffin on Sept. 21.

Greenbrier 21, Van Buren 0
