Van Buren sweeps conference foe; splits with Conway.

Van Buren completed its first tennis sweep of the season as it defeated Springdale in both the Men’s and Women’s matches on Thursday at the Van Buren City Courts.
The Pointers dropped just one set in the men’s doubles. The Lady Pointers won 6-3.
T.J. Saniseng was pushed by Tony Kopek to a 9-7 win, the closest men’s set of the day. Van Buren won the rest of their sets by at least an 8-0 margin. Len Huang won his 8-1.
“I was really proud of all the boys tonight because they are maturing with each match as far as getting on the court and getting things done,” coach Brandy Mosby said. “They aren’t wasting time, which gives their opponents less of an opportunity to score first and for us to put them on defense coming out of the gate. This is something we have been working on in practice.”
Other Pointer winners in the singles were Abel Diaz, Maanav Patel, Conner Hoffman and Christian Robertson. Hoffman and Patel won their No. 1 doubles set. Diaz and Huang won the No. 2 doubles.
Freshman Emily Saniseng had a slow start but defeated Neftali Sandoval 8-2 in the women’s No. 1 set.
Joana Maldonado, Alyssa Kroth, and Madi Gaona also won their respective sets for Van Buren.
“Emily needed this win. It’ll be a big confidence boost for her. This was a big win for the girls, and especially since it was at home and a Conference match,”
said Mosby. “We have 18 on the team this year, and 10 of them are new so this is a building year.”
Alyssa Seewald was down 5-0 and came back to make a run, but fell to an 8-5 decision. Kasey Kendall dropped her set but pushed Springdale’s Madison Cordell to a 9-7 decision.
Lexi Blasingame and Maldonado took the No. 1 doubles for Van Buren as Emily Saniseng and Seewald won the No. 2 doubles.
Kroth and Gaona were down 7-4, but their rally came up short as Springdale’s Carly Paulson and Brooke Scheffer won 9-8 (5-7).
