Seasons end for Soccer Pointers and Alma softball.

The Lady Pointers avenged last season’s loss to Southside in the 7A quarterfinals by scoring seven runs in the first two innings of the opening-round 7A game on May 11 at Fayetteville.

Van Buren routed Southside 11-1.

Van Buren (18-9), which beat Southside in the 2015 tournament en route to reaching the 7A semifinals, moves on to the 7A quarterfinals. The Lady Pointers, the No. 3 seed from the 7A-West, faced Cabot, the No. 2 seed from the 7A-Central on May 12.

The winner takes on the victor of the Bentonville-Bentonville West contest on May 13 at 2:30 p.m.

McKennah Sikes opened the scoring in the win by hitting a RBI double in the first inning. Later that inning, Baylor Miles then hit a two-RBI home run for a 3-0 lead.

It became 7-0 in the second as Sikes connected on a grand slam. It was her 14th home run of the season, as Sikes added on to her single-season school record in that category.

Up 7-1 in the fifth, Van Buren added four more runs as the game was called due to the run-rule. Janelle Parga and Caroline Davis each had RBI singles that inning, with Davis’ hit ending the game.

Davis, Sikes, and Miles each went 2-for-3, with Sikes driving in five runs.

Sikes was also the winning pitcher, giving up one hit, which was a solo homer by the Mavericks’ Piper Morgan in the top of the fourth. Sikes walked two and struck out five.

SOCCER — After going 1-11 in 7A West play, the Van Buren Pointers won their final two conference games to reach the state playoffs.

However, Bryant was able to shut down the Pointers in the first-round of the playoffs and ended Van Buren’s season.

Bryant scored on goal in both halves of the game on Thursday to beat Van Buren 2-0 at Mayo-Thompson Stadium.

The Pointers finished the season 7-17 overall and 3-11 in league play.

Van Buren defeated Heritage 3-2 on May 8 and edged Fayetteville in a 3-2 shootout on May 5. Both teams were tied 1-1 at the end of regulation.

SOFTBALL — Valley View broke a 1-all score in the late innings in ending the Airedalettes’ season back on May 11 in the opening round of the 5A State Tournament at Sherwood.

Alma tied the score at 1-all in the fourth on a solo home run by Abbye Ostrander.
