Betty Jo Wellnitz, 82, of Van Buren passed away Sunday, March 4, 2018, at her home. She was born May 8, 1935, in Little Rock. She was a homemaker and a member of Greenwood Freewill Baptist Church. She was the leader of the local Democratic Committee, a 4-H leader and a Girl Scout leader. She was preceded in death by her father and his wife, Ray and Lucille Wilson; her mother and her husband, Dorothy and Bill Reed; a brother, Sonny Boy Wilson; a sister, Polly Ashing; and a special nephew, Troy Ray Ashing.
She is survived by her husband, Tom Wellnitz of the home; three daughters, Sabrina Ross and husband Doug of Van Buren, Charlotte Thomas and husband Russell of Greenwood and Yvonne Lancaster and husband Christopher of Van Buren; a brother, Bill Reed of Glendora, Calif.; three grandchildren, Amanda-Jo Lancaster of Van Buren, Miranda Johns and husband Matt of Ashland City, Tenn., and Larissa Coleman and husband Nick of Greenwood; one great-grandchild, Hazel Jane Johns; and one on the way, Abigail Rae Lancaster.
Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home Chapel with interment to follow at the U.S. National Cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home of Van Buren.
Pallbearers will be Joe Hill, Gerald Thomas, Steve Coleman, Doug Ross, Chris Lancaster and Russell Thomas. Honorary pallbearers will be Nick Coleman, Matt Johns, Nathan Coon, Jim Atchison, Randy East, Jon Wellnitz and John Jordan.
