Caleb James Bright, 21, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 6, 2018, in Pensacola, Fla. He was born in Fort Smith and grew up in both Fort Smith and Van Buren. Caleb enjoyed playing baseball, football and watching the Green Bay Packers. He also loved swimming, computer games and people who made him laugh.

He was a 2014 graduate of the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts in Hot Springs. After graduating, he attended the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith while working at Bekaert until his enlistment in the United States Navy. He went to boot camp in 2016 and was completing training at the Center for Information Warfare in Pensacola at the time of his passing.

He is survived by his mother, Christina Thurby and her husband Greg of Van Buren; his father, James Bright of Sallisaw; his brother, Tyler Bright of Sallisaw; his stepsisters, Alexis Thurby of Alma and Bailey Thurby of Mexia, Ala.; his cousin, Stefani Hall of Fort Smith; maternal grandparents’ Daniel and Gail Hall of Fort Smith; paternal grandmother’ Beulah Bright of Sallisaw; his aunts, Lacy McClain, Sherri Barnes and Mary Castro; his uncle, Daniel J Hall; his great-aunt, Melissa Hall; great-uncle Ted Hall; and of course, his dog, Zowie.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Ocker Memorial Chapel in Van Buren, followed by graveside service with military honors at U.S. National Cemetery in Fort Smith

Family will visit with relatives and friends on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Ocker Funeral Home 700 Jefferson St., Van Buren.

Caleb will be missed dearly by his family and friends. He loved animals and never passed a dog he didn’t want to stop to pet. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Sebastian County Humane Society.
