Michael Wayne “Mike” Shelly, 67, of Van Buren died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2017, at a Tulsa hospital. He was born Aug. 17, 1950, in Fort Smith, 1969 graduate of Alma High School and was first recipient of the John Phillips Sousa Award for playing the trombone in the high school band.

In December of 1969, he enlisted in the Army and served as a mechanic during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged in 1990 as sergeant first class after 21 years service. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 20 years until his retirement in 2016.

He is survived by his wife, Hiromi; a daughter, Linda Seymour-Davies of Fayetteville; a son, William Shelly of Bixby, Okla.; mother Alvena Shelly of Van Buren; two sisters, Sheila Randolph and Melissa Shelly, both of Van Buren; a brother, Kenneth Shelly of Van Buren; and a grandchild.

Funeral was Aug. 24 at Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home Chapel with burial at U.S. National Cemetery in Fort Smith.

Pallbearers were Christopher Shelly, Tim, Eric, Eston and Allen Randolph and Basil Seymour-Davies.
