Two people died in a vehicle collision in LeFlore County on Thursday, according to a report from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

The collision took place at about 11:52 a.m. Thursday on U.S. 59 about half a mile north of Heavener in Leflore County. Don Mayes, 50, of Gore was driving north in a 2000 Chevrolet pickup on U.S. 59 while Walter Alexander Fanning, 25, of Miami was driving south in a 2007 Chevrolet pickup. Mayes' vehicle went left of center and struck Fanning's vehicle head on. Both were pronounced dead at the scene from injuries sustained in the collision.

The report states the condition of both drivers is under investigation. While seat belts were equipped for both vehicles, they were only in use in Mayes' vehicle, the report states. Airbags were deployed in both vehicles.
