The annual Sparks Stampede hosted by Sparks Medical Center - Van Buren will be Saturday.

Runners will be able to choose between a certified 5K or 10K route. Walkers also will be able to participate in the 5K.

Last year, Remi Mulloy of Van Buren was the overall male 5K winner with a time of 19:30.3. Daisy Conner, also of Van Buren, won in the female category with a time of 22:23.2.

In the 10K, Adolfo Aguirre of Lowell won in the male division with a time of 39:16.4 while Abrena Rine of Ozark was the top female finisher in a time of 42:27.1.

The event aims to promote physical fitness, while raising awareness of various forms of cancer. Profits from race registration fees will benefit the River Valley Ovarian Cancer Alliance and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Registration will begin at 7 a.m. and the race will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday at Sparks Medical Center – Van Buren, East Main and South 20th streets. A packet pick-up and dinner for participants will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday.

Those who register will receive a race T-shirt. Awards will be given to the top male and top female finishers, as well as first, second and third place finishers in the various age groups for runners and walkers in the 5K and 10K. For the first time, $50 cash awards will be given to the top male and female runners in the 5K and 10K.

Door prizes also will be awarded.

Last year the Sparks - Van Buren Auxiliary raised $5,300 for the two charities.
