Wiggle on!

That is the message school resource officer George Edelen left the Van Buren School Board after he was recognized Tuesday night for his “dedication and service to the students of the Van Buren School District for his amazing wiggle dance.”

Edelen told the board he saw a wiggle dance video on YouTube two weeks before school started and felt it would be a good way to better his relationship with the students as a school resource officer.

“I took the idea to King and City Heights Elementary schools and they said go for it,” Edelen said. “I put it on Facebook and had 25,000 hits within the first few hours. I even had the producer of the Steve Harvey show call.”

Edelen said his sole purpose in doing the video was to get the students to see police officers as their friends.

“When I go back out on the streets, I want the students to be comfortable with me and the rest of the officers.”

Dr. Harold Jeffcoat said there is no telling how far reaching the wiggle dance video is.

“We appreciate what you do,” Jeffcoat said. “You are very connected to the students and set a fine example.”

Edelen thanked the school board for its recognition.

“I love what I do and I will keep wiggling if that’s what it takes,” Edelen said.

He said the entire Van Buren Police Department and Van Buren School District is worthy of the recognition for what they do for the children in the community.

“I never thought in a million years this little wiggle dance I saw on YouTube would get so much attention,” he said. “But, I’m so happy it helps the kids enjoy school a little more than they already do.”

Also at Tuesday’s meeting, Midwest Bus Sales presented the school district with a check for $1,000 for its winning entry in a photo contest.

Timothy Toolen, general manager for Arkansas, and Vaughn Drum, regional account manager, presented the check to Jeffcoat for a photograph taken by D.J. McRoberts of one of the recently purchased buses from Midwest.
