Crawford County justices of the peace approved a measure to amend a county road position title and salary during their regular meeting on Monday night.

JPs approved a request from County Judge Dennis Gilstrap to change an equipment operator III position with a salary of $31,146.67 to project supervisor with a $33,130 salary.

In a job description provided by Gilstrap, in addition to operating multiple pieces of heavy equipment, the project supervisor is required to coordinate employee duties, have an overall knowledge of county road construction and have customer service skills.

Also during the meeting, JPs heard from election commissioner Bill Taylor on the progress of new voting machines for the county.

Taylor advised JPs that the state is disinclined to assist with the cost of new voting machines and the county should be prepared to pay for the machines in total. New voting machines for the county would total about $400,000, Taylor said.

When questioned, Taylor said the county might be able to go another four years without new machines, if no new requirements are put in place by the state legislature.

JP Elaina Damante asked about poll consolidations as a way to decrease the overall cost of purchasing new machines.

“We have consolidated some, but we can’t do it to the point that we make people have to drive far to vote,” Taylor said. “Our purpose is to make sure they can vote.”
