Van Buren School District Education Board members approved employment recommendations and were updated on the district’s financial status during their Tuesday night meeting.

Board members heard from Superintendent Dr. Harold Jeffcoat on two separate items regarding the financial state of the school district Tuesday night during their regularly scheduled meeting.

Jeffcoat notified members that the district is $309,000 ahead of schedule on its predicted year-end financial balance.

While the year-end balance was previously projected at $4.7 million, the updated projection is $5.072 million, Jeffcoat said.

“It’s good to see we’re ending the year much stronger than expected,” Jeffcoat said.

Another note of good financial news is that the district will be receiving $433,000 from the state to make up for the district failing to meet a tax collection mark.

By state law, school districts must have at least 25 mills of the millage collected dedicated to maintenance and operations.

The state will reimburse districts up to 98 percent of what is collected within the school district through city and county taxes if the 25 mills fails to meet that percentage, which is what happened in VBSD.

Also during the Tuesday meeting, the board approved employment recommendations.
