Cash prizes will be awarded to the winners in two flights in the Alma Area Chamber of Commerce Crossroads Classic golf tournament set for May 15 at Eagle Crest Golf Course.

A $300 cash prize will be given for first place in the first flight, and $200 for first place in the second flight, said Alma Area Chamber of Commerce Director Brian Huff.

Huff called the tournament “a great networking opportunity” for area business owners.

“It’s a great way to visit with other business owners, entertain your clients and get out of the office and enjoy the golf course on a beautiful Monday afternoon,” Huff said.

Predicted weather conditions for the day of the tournament are clear with the temperature at a high of 85 degrees, Huff said.

So far, 14 teams have signed up to take part in the tournament, which is the Alma chamber’s largest fundraiser for the year, Huff said.

“We’re very pleased with the turnout of teams for this tournament, but we still have some room for a few more teams if anyone else wants to play,” Huff said.

This year’s tournament - previously called the Popeye Classic - was renamed to align with the city’s image and motto as the Crossroads of America, Huff said.

Presented by Crabtree RV Center, the tournament will be a four player team scramble with golf cart, snacks and on-course drinks provided, as well as a barbecue lunch sponsored by Ergon Asphalt and Emulsions.

Cost to play is $75 per player or $300 for a team. Mulligans are $5 each, with a maximum of four per team.

Registration is at 11:30 a.m., lunch will be served at noon and the tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m., Huff said.

A to Z Sporting Goods is sponsoring the driving range, so players will have unlimited range balls to warm up, Huff said.

Besides cash prizes for the winners, other prizes include a The Vault hard-shell travel case for the “closest to the line” winner; an Odyssey Versa putter for the putting contest winner; and two high quality clubs for winners of “closest to the pin.”
