A resident at Alma Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center took second place at the Arkansas Health Care Association state pageant.

Patricia Powell, 83, was the second runner up at the AHCA 2017 Queen Pageant.

This is the first year a resident from Alma Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center has taken part in the state pageant, said director Debbie Fort. Fort called the pageant a “highlight” for the participants.

“I really enjoy this program because it makes the residents and their families feel alive and pretty and special,” Fort said.

A group of six including Fort, Patricia Powell and her husband Allen Powell, and Alma Healthcare’s therapy dog Lucy traveled to Hot Springs for the pageant, held at the Hot Springs Convention Center on Tuesday, April 25.

During the pageant, Patricia Powell was escorted by her husband and Lucy the therapy dog.

“Patricia’s husband, Allen, I think was just as excited as Pat was,” Fort said. “He went out and bought a new suit and tie.”

Lucy’s outfit was custom made to match Patricia Powell’s sequined charcoal gray ankle-length flared evening dress.

“I may be a little prejudiced, but I really thought Pat was the prettiest one there,” Fort said.

Judges for the pageant included Miss Arkansas Savannah Skidmore and Arkansas First Lady Susan Hutchinson.

Patricia Powell beat out eight other contestants at her facility and 10 district contestants to be named the district pageant winner, Fort said.

Each of the state’s seven districts send a contestant to the state pageant, which was held by the AHCA in conjunction with the Arkansas Assisted Living Association, Fort said.

Patricia Powell moved into Alma Healthcare about two and a half years ago after she and her husband retired in Alma, his hometown. Allen Powell continues to live in Alma and visits his wife every day, Fort said.

The couple, who have been married 30 years, raised three children and Patricia Powell built her own secretarial business in Rockwall, Texas, Fort said.
